Project Description: In recent years, traffic congestion-related problems (energy, environment, safety, etc.) have been increasing globally. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) technology has become a key research area for internationally renowned research institutions, internet companies, and automotive manufacturers. Research shows that CACC technology has significant advantages in improving traffic flow efficiency and mitigating traffic accidents. However, even vehicles equipped with the latest CACC technology cannot operate safely and autonomously in simple real-world traffic scenarios. The main reason is that onboard computing and control systems are the biggest technical bottleneck behind CACC technology. This project will enhance CACC’s self-organizing capabilities through AI-inspired methods (adaptive learning systems, human-computer interaction, multi-agent cognitive systems), primarily researching: self-organizing capabilities of heterogeneous (different dynamics) vehicles in mixed traffic scenarios with human-driven/autonomous vehicles, self-organizing communication, and self-organizing platooning issues.
